Top OF Mind
how Far We’ve come
Following the 20th anniversary celebration of ALFA in Phoenix last month, I celebrated my father’s 90th birthday with my siblings and all his many friends
in Memphis, Tennessee. Then, the next day, my father and I drove 130 miles to
Batesville, Arkansas, where he had met my mother more than half a century ago.
It was also where I was born. We went straight to the old homeplace where I had
often visited my grandparents as a kid.
