for the ALFA 2010 Conference & Expo.
The three days were packed with first-rate executive sessions, peer-to-peer discussions, timely and insightful keynotes,
new solutions from industry partners,
and top-level networking opportunities. This can’t-miss event for senior
living executives was also a high-profile
celebration of ALFA’s 20th year serving

work of the California Assisted Living Association (CALA) and Georgia ALFA.
ALFA also honored Georgia Rep.
Chuck Martin with the 2010 ALFA
Statesman Award. Martin introduced the
bill pending in the Georgia legislature
offering frailer seniors more choice in
where they can live.
The ALFA 2010 Best of the Best
Award recipients also received recognition at the conference in Phoenix, as did
the ALFA 2010 Heroes (go to “Senior

Presentations on each Core Principle
are high-impact two-minute videos that
senior living companies can use to fuel
public relations, education, and marketing efforts, particularly as communities
nationwide continue to meet the diverse
needs of the nation’s growing senior

Also among the highlights: Keynote
speaker Maddy Dychtwald, co-founder of
Age Wave, a demographic forecasting and
research firm, set the stage on day one
with a presentation on the mindset of the
new aging consumer. She was followed
the next morning by keynote speaker
Phil Lempert (pictured above), an expert
analyst on consumer behavior often seen
on major news networks reporting on con-
sumer trends and changing marketplaces.
ALFA 2010 Awards
This year ALFA presented its first Horace
D’Angelo, Jr. Memorial Awards to honor
the late Horace D’Angelo, Jr., founder
of Caretel Inns and tireless advocate for
cobb Leads ALFA directors
Another high-profile event at the ALFA 2010 Conference &
Expo: granger cobb, president and co-CEO of Seattle-based
emeritus senior Living, began his chairmanship of the ALFA
Board of Directors. Cobb succeeds tiffany tomasso, former
COO of McLean, Virginia-based sunrise senior Living, who
served as ALFA chairman for the past two years.
Several new directors also began their roles in May, includ-
ing: chuck herman, executive vice president/CIO of health
care Reit, Toledo, Ohio; Laura Mcduffie, senior vice president of operations,
sunrise senior Living; and Blair Minton, president and founder of BMA Manage-
